South Jordan Has Two Saturday Morning Markets, and Only One of Them Will Sell You a Taco

Tell a friend to meet you at "the farmers market" in South Jordan on a Saturday morning and you might end up at two different addresses. One of you will be standing among craft booths and live music on SoDa Row. The other will be a mile and a half away at Towne Center, next to a produce stand and a food truck. Both of you will insist you're at the right place, because both of you are.

This isn't a scheduling mix-up. South Jordan runs two separate Saturday markets during the same overlapping season, and they were built to do different jobs. Once you know why, the choice between them stops being confusing and starts being useful.

Two Markets, Same Day, Different Jobs

The Daybreak Farmers Market is the one most people mean when they say "the farmers market." It's parked on SoDa Row at 11274 S Kestrel Rise Rd, runs Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and this year marks its eighth season, stretching from June 13 through October 17. More than 50 vendor booths set up weekly, managed by Empowered Community Markets, with live music running through the morning. It started in 2018 as a joint effort between LiveDAYBREAK, the community council, and a Daybreak resident named Stephanie Devine, and it has grown into the kind of fixture that shapes a neighborhood's Saturday rhythm.

The other market, run separately by the Utah Farm Bureau in partnership with the City of South Jordan, sets up at 1600 West Towne Center Dr, also on Saturdays, but only from August through October, a shorter window than Daybreak's. It leans hard into what its name promises: fruits and vegetables in season, fresh bread, jams, salsas, pickled vegetables, tamales, and food trucks.

Same city, same day of the week, same general hours. Different reason to show up.

The Rule That Explains the Split

Here's the detail that actually explains why Daybreak's market looks the way it does. Its vendor policy explicitly bars food sellers from offering items that would compete with the restaurants already sitting a few steps away on SoDa Row. Coffee is out. Hamburgers are out. Mexican food, Hawaiian food, and dirty soda are all off limits for market vendors. Food sellers who do participate are required to operate out of a licensed cottage or commercial kitchen, since Utah's Homemade Food Act coverage doesn't apply here.

That's not an arbitrary rule. SoDa Row already has a coffee shop, a Mexican restaurant, and a soda-and-treats counter doing that exact business six days a week. The market was built to complement those tenants, not compete with them, which is why it skews toward jewelry, soap, candles, small batch jam, and baked goods rather than a row of food trucks. It's also why, if you're craving a hot meal on a Saturday morning at Daybreak, you're better off walking into one of the restaurants than shopping the booths for one.

The Towne Center market carries no such restriction, because there's no adjacent restaurant row to protect. That's the whole difference in one policy line: one market was designed around existing storefronts, the other was designed around the absence of them.

What's Already Sitting a Few Steps Away

If you do walk into SoDa Row hungry, the options have been there for years and keep expanding. Porch serves Southern comfort food with a modern lean, brunch on weekends, a $30 three-small-plates-and-soda deal on Tapas Tuesday, and a Thursday prix fixe running app, entree, and dessert for the same price. Tio's has been a fixture for more than three decades. The Break Sports Grill anchors one end of the row with a family-friendly sister spot, Break Shack, nearby. Cupbop brings Korean-style bowls. Mozz, a wood-fired pizzeria that first opened in Provo back in 2019, now has a Daybreak location serving house-made ricotta and mozzarella alongside its pies. Down by the water, The Lake Break offers a more coastal, seafood-leaning menu on the shore of Oquirrh Lake, the sit-down counterpart to its sportier sibling.

None of that shows up in the market booths on purpose. The restaurants and the market were built to work as a set, not as competitors for the same Saturday dollar.

The Rest of the Week Fills In Around It

Saturday morning is only the anchor. SoDa Row also runs free outdoor concerts every Friday night at 8 p.m. on the SoDa Row Stage, no ticket required, though the venue does enforce one house rule: no chairs or blankets set up before 7 p.m., to keep the plaza usable for everyone until showtime. That weekly slot has run through the summer and is still going as of mid-August.

Twice a month, the rhythm shifts to Tuesday. The Cove Night Market, now in its second year, sets up at The Cove House on 6650 W Lake Ave on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month, 5 to 9 p.m., running from June 9 through October 27. It's a smaller, evening-format version of the Saturday market, built around the same kind of small-batch goods, soaps, candles, and baked treats, but with the plaza lit up after dark instead of in morning sun.

And just two weeks ago, on August 1, the plaza hosted the Horizon Arts Festival, formerly known as Fizz Fest, Daybreak's annual arts showcase with live demonstrations, a concert, a silent auction, and a Plaza Market layered into a single afternoon and evening. It's the kind of one-off that shows up once a year and reminds residents how much foot traffic the plaza can actually hold when everything runs at once.

Stack it together and a South Jordan week built around SoDa Row looks less like a single event and more like an ongoing schedule: Friday night for music, Saturday morning for the artisan market, and every other Tuesday for a smaller evening version of the same thing.

Which Saturday Is Actually Yours

If you're the kind of person planning a week around what's fresh in season, the Towne Center market is doing the job you actually want, now that its shorter August-through-October run is underway.
